Every Year Nagoya Hosts One of the Six "Honbasho" Sumo Tournaments Held in Japan!

Tournaments of sumo, the national sport of Japan, are called "Honbasho," and are held six times a year in various parts of the country, in sequence. "Nagoya Basho" is held annually in July at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, neighbor to the city's jewel, Nagoya Castle. Each "Basho" tournament lasts for 15 days, during which wrestlers fight in matches under a round robin system by Sumo "Heya" (guild), and each "heya" compete to win the "basho" by the number of wins and losses in those matches.
