When it was first built, the Hotei Buddha sat amongst open fields with only a small hospital behind it. Passengers on the Meitetsu Inuyama line between Hotei and Konan Stations would crane their necks watching for the spectacle as the train rumbled by. Over the years, private houses and workshops have sprung up around it, making the huge religious icon an even stranger sight.
